State of the Beaver 2010 Conference
We need more water! We want our native salmon runs back! And we don't want to break the bank restoring them! Welcome to the State of the Beaver 2010 Conference where we will learn to work with beavers to help accomplish all of this and minimize the negative impact beavers can have on private property and infrastructure.
State, Federal, Tribal, Industrial and Conservation Organizations want the beavers back too! Come join us this coming February 3rd, 4th, and 5th. Explore with us the array of options presented by a panel of international experts on beavers and watershed management.
Who is invited?
Anyone who is involved with forestry, agriculture, infrastructure/wildland interfaces, watershed restoration, fisheries, restoration ecology or water resources is invited.
If you are interested in real solutions to restoring natural resources and maintaining sustainable economic and natural processes from an industrial, scientific or academic standpoint you should come.
If you are concerned about the wildlands/domestic interface or if beavers have been a problem for you this conference will provide you with answers.
If you are a “person of place” with watershed concerns you need to be there.
Follow any of the links on this page to learn more. They will direct you to all the information you need to know concerning our February 3rd, 4th and 5th conference focused on Castor canadensis. Direct all questions concerning the conference to either beavers@surcp.org or stanley@surcp.org. We will reply as soon as possible
Beavers:
A Keystone Species, whose dam building activities create a connectivity between land and water, greatly enhancing both aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems. Their engineering feats over the centuries have created the most productive and fertile environments. The value of their impact on the landscape is far outweighing the nuisance status they currently have.
Salmon and Fisheries:
Oregon's historic salmon runs are intimately connected to Oregon's historic beaver populations. The salmon runs are a part of our social and economic backbone. If you are interested in restoration ecology and rebuilding salmon populations, you should attend this beaver centric conference.
Water:
The connection between beavers, water quantity and water quality is well established. Beavers have a direct positive effect on aquifers, water temperature and water availability. Water is one of our most precious resources and beavers are the ancient natural managers of our watershed aquatic ecosystems. Their water storage abilities are a perfect natural solution to the current and upcoming increases in demand for water resources.
Living With Beavers−Turning a Nuisance into an Asset:
Experts who have successfully addressed the issues surrounding beavers and human infrastructure interfaces in the agricultural and timber industries will present contemporary non-lethal solutions to beaver management issues.
A National Forum, Local and Global in Scope:
The Beaver Advocacy Committee (BAC)of the South Umpqua Rural Community Partnership(SURCP), The Partnership for the Umpqua Rivers and the Cow Creek Band of the Umpqua Indian Tribe, in collaboration with State and Federal Agencies along with Academic and Private Institutions, are sponsoring this conference that focuses on the economic and ecological benefits of Castor Canadensis. See our sponsors on our sponsors page here.
The conference will have an emphasis on practical solutions to beaver management issues along with the latest scientific findings relating beavers to fisheries ecology and aquifer hydraulics.
The conference will feature Dr. Duncan Halley, Research Ecologist of the Norwegian Institute for Nature Research, Trondheim, Norway as the keynote speaker and a conference presenter. Dr. Halley has successfully translocated beavers throughout Europe.
Presenters are from across the United States including State, Federal, Academic and Native American Tribal Nations. Each is an expert in their field. They have a wealth of scientific knowledge and practical experience to draw from.
Conference Site:
The conference will be held at the popular Convention Center at the Seven Feathers Hotel and Casino Resort in Canyonville, Oregon. Special hotel rates will be provided for conference attendees by the Cow Creek Tribe of the Umpqua Indians, one of the conference sponsors. Local motel facilities are available also.
